Hostile Vehicle Mitigation
2023
- Abstract
- The imminent threat stemming from the use of vehicles as a weapon in urban environments may be mitigated by employing properly designed protective structures such as bollards, street furniture or landscaping options. The performance of such vehicle security barriers is typically conducted through the single impact of a test vehicle, according to the provisions of various standards and guidelines. Though, the high cost of such tests limits strongly the number of examined crash scenarios. . Over the last decades, the automotive industry and research community has acquired significant experience from the use of numerical simulations. These type of simulations requires a very detailed numerical model of the vehicle. However, the evaluation of the performance of security barriers or other components through numerical simulations does not call for detailed vehicle models that penalise the time required for the analysis. The adoption of common standardised numerical vehicle models will allow the comparison of the performance of different security solutions, without increasing the number of physical tests. Such models should be generic, i.e. brand independent and adjustable to any vehicle from a given category. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre is currently developing such generic vehicle models, starting with the N1 category, 3.5 t delivery truck.
