Abstract
As a part of the European Commission support to the EU Member States in protecting public spaces against terrorist attacks by vehicle ramming, the JRC is developing guidance material and tools supporting informed decision-making by urban authorities and other local stakeholders, within the project portfolio “SMART-PROTECT” and in a close cooperation with the “Directorate General HOME”. In this report, we present a generic vehicle model representing the category N3G of the ISO 22343 standard, corresponding to 30t heavy construction trucks. The N3G category is considered as the most severe vehicle ramming threat possible in an urban environment. Like the two previous generic vehicle models published by the JRC, the first one for the N1 category and the second one for the categories N2A and N3D, the new model will also be disseminated publicly under the open source public licence EUPL (EU Public Licence) and is intended for use by different stakeholders for virtual testing of security barriers. The model is generic, because it is brand independent and can represent most of vehicles of the category N3G for numerical simulations of a crash on a security barrier. It has been tested following the standard verification procedures for road safety barriers (CEN/TR 16303). Since no crash test experimental data were available for quantitative validation, only qualitative checks of crash simulations could be performed.
